Wooden Wick vs Cotton Wick: What’s the Real Difference?
Finally getting around to this blog post on a question we probably get asked once a week!
"Is there a difference between a wooden and cotton wick?"
We all know that wooden wicks have an aesthetically pleasing look - but is there a real difference between wooden and cotton wicks? And why did I choose wooden wicks for my brand?
This wasn't only a design choice for my brand but a strategic decision based on numerous other factors:
Wooden wicks burn much cleaner, they do not get the carbon buildup that cotton wicks get. Have you ever burned a cotton wick candle near a wall only to be cleaning off the black spot on your wall after? Wooden wicks have minimal soot and the reduced carbon buildup means no toxic residue. Our wicks are made from natural, untreated FSC- certified wood. The design of a wooden wick results in a wide flame that allows for a stronger scent throw, longer burn time and a modern aesthetic that elevates your space. When starting this brand, I looked into the cleanest ingredients I could find, including the wicks!
Why did we choose wooden wicks?
Cleaner, Even Burn
Unlike cotton wicks that may “mushroom” or burn unevenly, wooden wicks create a consistent flame with minimal soot and less carbon build-up. That means no black jars or toxic residue.
Cozy Crackling Sound
One of the biggest perks of wooden wicks is their gentle crackle, adding the relaxing ambiance of a fireplace to your candle experience.
Better Fragrance Throw
Because wooden wicks create a wider melt pool faster, the fragrance disperses more evenly and effectively, filling your room quicker than most cotton wick candles.
Longer Burn Time
Wooden wicks burn more slowly and evenly, making your candle last longer and preventing wax tunneling.
More Eco-Friendly
Our wooden wicks are FSC certified- sustainably harvested and free from harmful treatments or additives, unlike some cotton wicks that are bleached or chemically processed.
Stylish and Modern Look
A wooden wick offers a sleek, minimal look that complements modern home decor. No curled or frayed cotton—just a smooth, natural aesthetic.
